The Financial Post reports in Friday, Nov. 20, edition that Alberta's new policy announcement shows it is intent on neutralizing criticism so oil pipelines can move forward. The Post's Claudia Cattaneo writes that the new policy is landing at the same time as high-level meetings between the provinces and the federal government aim to nail down a national plan in time for the UN climate change summit in Paris, starting Nov. 30. Alberta Energy Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd said Alberta intends to act aggressively on its own, to prevent others from imposing their own targets. Meanwhile, the relentless campaign against the oil sands has plainly had an effect on industry attitudes. Producers are struggling to understand Canadians' hostility to the powerful economic benefit Alberta developed, and consumers' growing desire to move off oil altogether. According to public opinion research commissioned by Cenovus Energy, 39 per cent of out of 2,000 Canadians polled a year ago want the country to move off oil within the next 10 years, and 28 per cent want that transition to happen in the next 10 to 20 years. About 64 per cent are worried that gasoline is contributing to climate change.
