The Vancouver Sun reports in its Thursday edition Alberta's premier-designate Rachel Notley has recommended moving on from the Northern Gateway pipeline project, which she considers all but dead. A Sun editorial says this will put less pressure on British Columbia to approve the project. An NDP government is bound to create a degree of uncertainty for business in Alberta. Ms. Notley has pledged to raise provincial corporate taxes to 12 per cent, the same level as in B.C., and introduce a more progressive system of income taxes that would increase the revenue take from top earners. An NDP government also is expected to review royalty rates for energy companies, strengthen environmental protections and encourage more refinery capacity in the province. All this, says Business Council of B.C. president Greg D'Avignon, will probably result in more capital investment and workers coming to B.C. which would increase this province's labour pool, reducing labour costs. B.C.'s greater concern will be the over-all economic health of the region, and the country. B.C. Premier Christy Clark should be reaching out early and often to Ms. Notley and company, taking every opportunity available to co-operate with Alberta.
