The Vancouver Sun reports in its Friday edition Jim Prentice has a challenging to-do list as he settles into the Alberta premier's office. A Sun editorial says near the top of it is lobbying to move his province's energy resources to market. He must re-energize Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline project. To that end, he has taken on the jobs of Minister of International and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Aboriginal Relations. The proposed $6.5-billion pipeline, originally set to begin operations in 2018, would be assigned to carry oil sands bitumen across British Columbia to Kitimat. Mr. Prentice has a successful record in liasons with aboriginal groups whose opposition to Northern Gateway is a major obstacle to the project. Mr. Prentice should schedule an early meeting with B.C. Premier Christy Clark to seek further insight on next steps. He might also want to support the notion of a refinery being established in B.C. A refinery also would process the bitumen into a safer commodity for transport, one with less deleterious properties in the event of a tanker spill. Mr. Prentice needs to be sensitive to the many reservations British Columbians are raising about a pipeline's potential impact.
