The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, July 29, edition that the Tory government is depending on jobs,
trade and pipelines to usher in an economic success story. The Globe's Lawrence Martin writes that Ottawa's three pillars for economic success are
starting to look wobbly.
News out of Germany is
that it may reject the free trade
deal between Canada and the
European Union. That would be a
disaster.
The agreement was touted by
the Harper government as being
almost as significant as the free trade pact with
the United States.
Germany is opposed to
certain clauses in the pact. A return to the negotiating
table seems likely. For pipelines the news is all bad. Prospects for the
construction of Enbridge's Northern
Gateway pipeline have tumbled
since the Supreme Court decision
last month which effectively
gives aboriginal groups more
powers of control over lands slated
for development projects. The Tories have been foursquare
behind Gateway, as well as
TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline whose fate is also in
great doubt.
As for jobs, the economy's continues
to slide on job creation. The
outlook, according to Bank of
Canada Governor Steven Poloz, is
not brightening.
