The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, July 17, edition that Finance Minister Joe Oliver has turned to fashion and retail moguls to advise him on economic policy. The Globe's Anna Nicolaou writes that new members of Mr. Oliver's Economic Advisory Council include Dani Reiss, the force behind the popular Canada Goose brand, and Bonnie Brooks, vice-chairman of Hudson's Bay. Mr. Oliver is keeping eight of the 13 members who served on the previous panel under the late Jim Flaherty. The new faces Mr. Oliver is adding include John Bradlow, chairman of private equity firm Penfund. Mr. Flaherty created the advisory council during the turmoil of the financial crisis in 2008. The economy has clearly brightened since 2008. Ms. Nicolaou says it seems the focus will now be on the fiscal picture. Mr. Oliver says, "It is important we listen to Canada's leading business and economic innovators." Among the eight new members, three are women and four are Ontario-based. Canaccord Genuity founder Peter Brown will remain on the council, as will Power Corp. of Canada co-chairman Paul Desmarais Jr. Rogers Communications deputy chairman Edward Rogers leaves the panel, as will Bank of Montreal chairman Robert Prichard.
