FP says BCE, Rogers see regulator lay down condo law

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that the CRTC has threatened to cut off Internet and television services to all residents of a Toronto condo complex unless the strata corporation allows a fourth telco access to its buildings. The Post's Emily Jackson writes that it is the third time the regulator has resorted to such a threat in less than three year. The rules say condo residents should have access to their provider of choice. The federal telco regulator ruled that King West Condominiums, a three-building development on East Liberty Street in Toronto's west end, must grant access to Beanfield Technologies Inc., an upstart residential fibre network operator, to install a network. The building is already served by Bell Canada, Coextro and Rogers Communications. If the condo corporation does not let Beanfield set up shop within 120 days, the CRTC may take action to prevent the three current operators from providing any services to the residents, according to a decision issued Monday. The CRTC issued similar decisions in 2014 and 2015 in which Bell wanted to operate in two Toronto condos. In these cases, the regulator stipulated it would cut existing services unless Bell was given access.
