Globe says BCE prevails over Rogers on Argos ownership

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition even today, the poor old Toronto Argonauts have no luck. The Globe's David Shoalts writes here they are, about to get out from under the ownership of David Braley, and into the arms of Larry Tanenbaum and BCE, two-thirds of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. The Argos are also set to escape the cavernous Rogers Centre for fan-friendly BMO Field. Rogers, however, the other third of MLSE, told their partners to stuff it on buying the Argos, since it was merely a play to bolster the CFL programming for Bell Media's TSN. Rogers was not keen on paying to help the hated rival of its own Sportsnet. The new ownership structure did not give the Argos official MLSE sibling status with the likes of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors and Toronto FC, but two-thirds of MLSE is better than none. They had to make sure there were no soccer fans in sight screaming about the damage the Argos will do to the BMO pitch when they become co-tenants with Toronto FC in 2016. The storm clouds started gathering an hour or two before the big news conference as the Maple Leafs unexpectedly surfaced in the bidding for now-former Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock.
