The Vancouver Sun reports in its Thursday edition that a Vancouver Park Board commissioner wants staff to look at ways to ban the sale of pot at this year's 4/20 event at Sunset Beach. The Sun's David Carrigg quotes commissioner Tricia Barker saying that she wants staff to start by figuring out who has authority when it comes to enforcing Canada's new pot laws at the event. "My personal issue is no smoking in parks," Ms. Barker said. "I'm really passionate about that." She plans to present a motion at the Feb. 11 parks board meeting raising the issue of a ban, asking Mayor Kennedy Stewart to find an alternative site for the event, and asking staff to find ways to minimize the impact of the event. According to Ms. Barker, "disregard for local residents and public complaints and concerns about the disruption caused by 4/20 needs to be addressed." Dana Larsen, one of the organizers of 4/20 and owner of two illegal marijuana shops, said that marijuana sales were "the whole point" of the event. "Considering we are in a country with a cannabis shortage, and people need access to cannabis, 4/20 is a way to make that happen," he said, adding that it costs at least $100,000 to put on the event, including $60,000 in fees to the city.
