The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition the U.S. stock market is at all-time highs, but the Canadian markets have had a turbulent time over the past year as the plummeting price of oil and value of the Canadian dollar have left deep scars across many sectors. Post columnist David Kaufman writes juniors listed on the TSX Venture Exchange have been particularly hard hit, with the index having fallen 30 per cent over the past year and 70 per cent since early 2011. It appears investors think, As goes oil, so goes investor sentiments -- irrespective of whether the company is tied to the oil industry or not. Mr. Kaufman says investors should focus on quality companies with strong balance sheets and whose businesses have virtually nothing to do with oil and gas. Investors today (especially those with long-term horizons) have a rare opportunity to construct a portfolio of companies that are much less expensive than they either have been or ought to be. Mr. Kaufman adds every investor has a "could've, would've, should've" file full of investments we thought about but passed on, only to ask ourselves after the fact how we could have missed them.
