West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery gained 23 cents to $63.80 on the New York Merc, while Brent for March gained six cents to $69.26 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $25.05 to WTI ($38.75), unchanged. Natural gas for February gained 18 cents to $3.08. The TSX energy index closed up 2.71 points to 199.73.

Many oil and gas producers enjoyed a rally today, a welcome respite as they continue attempting to recover significant share price losses from the first half of 2017. Among them are Cenovus Energy Inc. (CVE), which today gained 58 cents to $13.69 on 10.47 million shares but is still down from about $19.20 a year ago, and Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE), which today gained 10 cents to $4.12 on 10.71 million shares but is still down from about $5.80 a year ago. As well, MEG Energy Corp. (MEG) today gained 50 cents to $5.52 on 7.15 million shares but is still down from about $7.75 a year ago, and Surge Energy Inc. (SGY) today gained 10 cents to $2.10 on 5.89 million shares but is still down from about $3.20 a year ago.
