West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery added 16 cents to $48.23 on the New York Merc, while Brent for November added 43 cents to $54.27 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.15 to WTI ($36.08), unchanged. Natural gas for October added five cents to $3. The TSX energy index added 2.34 points to close at 174.04.

Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE) added eight cents to $3.20 on 3.09 million shares. Its operations in the Texas Eagle Ford, which were shut in on Aug. 25 because of tropical storm Harvey, are now back to normal. The Eagle Ford makes up roughly half of Baytex's production, with the other half coming from Western Canada. Baytex said its infrastructure saw "very little" damage from the storm and that its activity levels are "consistent with our expected pace of development during the second half of 2017." Because the shut-ins were temporary, the company has decided not to reduce its full-year production guidance, which remains 69,000 to 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day.
