West Texas Intermediate crude for March delivery added 27 cents to $53.20 on the New York Merc, while Brent for April added 38 cents to $55.97 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $14.80 to WTI ($38.40), unchanged. Natural gas for March lost four cents to $2.90. The TSX energy index added 1.75 points to close at 204.99.

Alberta Montney gas producer Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (AAV) added four cents to $8.50 on 597,900 shares. President and chief executive officer Andy Mah headed to BNN yesterday to discuss the North American gas markets and, of course, to promote Advantage's role in them as "the lowest-cost natural gas producer probably on the continent." All gas producers in Canada raised their eyebrows earlier this month after U.S. regulators approved the 3.25-billion-cubic-foot-a-day Rover pipeline, which if built will carry gas from the U.S. Marcellus and Utica plays into Ontario. The builder, Energy Transfer Partners (which is also behind the Dakota Access protest magnet), says it expects Rover to be in service by November. This is making Western Canadian gas producers nervous, as it cuts into the need for domestic supplies. The desire to maintain market share in the east is all the more pressing because no liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects have been built in the west to enable access to new markets.
