West Texas Intermediate crude for March delivery added 29 cents to $53.83 on the New York Merc, while Brent for April added 25 cents to $56.81 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $13.40 to WTI ($40.43), unchanged. Natural gas for March lost 13 cents to $3.06. The TSX energy index lost a fraction to close at 203.41.
Alberta gas producer Bellatrix Exploration Ltd. (BXE) lost one cent to $1.03 on 788,300 shares, despite winning more time to save its imperiled New York Stock Exchange listing. The company was warned by the NYSE last August that its share price had closed at less than $1 (U.S.) for 30 consecutive trading days, triggering a six-month continued listing review. The review was set to end tomorrow, Feb. 4, but Bellatrix has now received an extension to its next annual shareholder meeting, expected to be held on May 17. Bellatrix says it will use the time to try to whip its share price back into shape. It also says it may ask shareholders at the meeting to approve a rollback. The company has 246 million shares outstanding.
