West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery added 13 cents to $41.96 on the New York Merc, while Brent for October added 22 cents to $44.41 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $14.80 to WTI ($27.16), unchanged. Natural gas for September lost seven cents to $2.76. The TSX energy index added 2.59 points to close at 192.71.

RMP Energy Inc. (RMP) touched an intraday low of 99 cents, its first time below $1 since January, before settling at $1.06, down 11 cents, on 6.73 million shares. It has become the second company this week to announce a "strategic review" of its Montney assets -- though with a decidedly more desperate air. A strategic review is generally a euphemism used by companies that want to sell themselves or their assets. That is not necessarily, or perhaps even primarily, the goal of Chinook Energy Inc. (CKE) (down one cent to 50 cents on 49,700 shares), which started a strategic review on Tuesday and emphasized its desire to expand its Montney position. It is open to sales, but is under no pressure to accept offers. As discussed in more detail in Wednesday's Energy Summary, it has about $20-million in working capital and no debt.
