New York spot gold fell $8.20 to $1,198.70 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange dipped 0.34 point to 719.91 while the TSX Gold Index lost 1.63 points to 156.11. Most Canadian gold miners were lower today. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM), above $78 two years ago, dropped another 64 cents to $44.76 on 1.67 million shares. Tahoe Resources Inc. (THO) lost 11 cents to $3.74 on 3.85 million shares.

Michael Scherb and Stephen Roman's Harte Gold Corp. (HRT) jumped to an intraday high of 56 cents before ending the day up 6.5 cents to 45.5 cents on 6.17 million shares. The move follows word that the company has received the permits needed to start production at its Sugar Zone project, northeast of White River in Northern Ontario. Mr. Roman, chairman, president and chief executive officer, says that this ends the commercial permitting phase and starts the "full-scale operations" phase. (There is still the little matter of completing the construction phase.) Even Doug Ford, Ontario's new premier, chimed in. He cheered the "great news for the people of White River," noting that the mine will support hundreds of northern workers through direct and indirect jobs.
