New York spot gold lost $5.40 to $1,221.70 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange dipped 4.41 points to 713.17 while the TSX Gold Index added 0.02 point to 189.54. Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) led Canadian gold miners lower today. It slipped six cents to $3.68 on 6.89 million shares. Premier Gold Mines Inc/ (PG) went the other way. It rose seven cents to $2.80 on 1.38 million shares.
Michael Kenyon's Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) dropped 35 cents to $13.35 on 4.67 million shares. The company's battle with dissident shareholder, Paulson & Co., continues to heat up. Paulson, which owns just over 5 per cent of Detour's stock, became upset in April, after the company's stock plummeted to barely $9 from $15 on word that its Detour mine in Ontario was facing materially higher costs. When the spat surfaced late in June, Paulson said it was seeking to replace the company's board and perhaps arrange a sale of the company, suggestions that greatly annoyed Mr. Kenyon, Detour's interim president and chief executive officer.
