New York spot gold lost $5.70 to $1,275.80 on Tuesday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 0.99 point to 796.59 while the TSX Gold Index dipped 0.43 point to 195.03. Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG) led the retreat, slumping to an intraday low of $12.50 and ending the day down $3.29 to $14.15 on 2.13 million shares. The stock dipped 52 cents Monday on word Torex had halted work at its ELG mine in Mexico's aptly named Guerrero state because of a labour dispute blockade. Now, the company has had to evacuate its remaining staff after a gang of locals and blockaders invaded the mine and threatened the crew. Labour relations in Mexico can be lively.

Anthony Makuch's Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. (KL) jumped $1.31 to $18.65 on 1.87 million shares. The company has drilled 8.85 metres averaging 991 grams of gold per tonne in the Swan zone at its Fosterville mine in Australia. Most of the gold came from a 0.95-metre interval that assayed 9,115 grams per tonne. Three of the 14 other holes yielded intervals topping 100 grams per tonne, including a 7.3-metre zone that averaged 422 grams per tonne and a 1.55-metre interval that ran 649 grams per tonne.
