New York spot gold gained $12.10 to $1,281.50 on Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 3.62 points to 795.60 while the TSX Gold Index added 3.38 points to 195.46. Most Canadian gold miners followed bullion higher today. Franco-Nevada Corp. (FNV) led the way, adding $5.87 to $107.46 on 1.04 million shares. Even struggling Eldorado Gold Corp. (EDG) managed a one-cent gain, closing at $1.59 on 7.68 million shares.

Fred Stanford's Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG) slumped to an intraday low of $16.475 before closing down 52 cents to $17.44 on 983,000 shares. The company had to suspend production at its El Limon-Guajes gold mine in Guerrero, Mexico, because of an illegal blockade by 20 unionized employees. The employees want Torex to change the labour union representing them. Torex points out that the employees must follow the government-sanctioned process to do so. The unhappy group remains on the bricks and with no unionized employees available, Torex had to shut down its processing plant. (It did so in an "orderly manner" and will focus on maintaining environmental protections.)
