New York spot gold gained $17.10 to $1,180.20 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 13.72 points to 794.26 while the TSX Gold Index added 11.21 points to 212.40. Most Canadian miners moved sharply higher today, led by Torex Gold Inc. (TXG), which leapt $4.72 to $26.75 on 3.16 million shares on word it has drilled 3.4 metres averaging 317.8 grams of gold per tonne at El Limon in Mexico.

Mario Stifano's Cordoba Minerals Corp. (CDB), down 12 cents to 73 cents on 1.03 million shares, has a maiden resource estimate for its Alacran gold and copper deposit on the San Matias project in Colombia. (Cordoba is working San Matias with its majority co-venturer, Robert Friedland's private High Power Exploration Inc.) The partners credit Alacran with a pit-constrained 53.52 million tonnes inferred at 0.37 gram of gold per tonne, plus 0.70 per cent copper. (They list 7.37 million of those tonnes with higher grades: 2.14 per cent copper and 0.41 gram of gold per tonne.)
