New York spot gold fell $6.80 to $1,150.90 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 2.15 points to 762.37 while the TSX Gold Index fell 8.08 points to 194.25. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) led Canadian gold miners lower today, losing $2.12 to $56.45 on 1.14 million shares. Alacer Gold Corp. (ASR) went the other way. It gained one cent to $2.24 on 3.81 million shares.

Bruce McLeod and LeRoy Wilkes's Sabina Gold and Silver Corp., down two cents to 98 cents on 813,000 shares, is still waiting for the Canadian government to formally decide what to do with the company's Back River gold project in central Nunavut. The government had earlier suggested that it would have a decision by the end of the year. In this case, no news may be good news: In June, the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) completed a lengthy review of the company's 15,000-page environmental impact statement and recommended that the Back River project not proceed now. The NIRB apparently wanted more information to address "uncertainties regarding effects predictions and mitigations measures" -- untold reams of more paperwork -- particularly regarding caribou and climate change.
