New York spot gold gained $9.60 to $1,272.80 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 6.09 points to 679.68 while the TSX Gold Index rose 3.95 points to 224.43. Most Canadian gold miners rose today, led by Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM), which added 92 cents to $59.65 on 1.46 million shares. Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) was the laggard today, falling 61 cents to $28.77 on 1.63 million shares.

John McConnell's Victoria Gold Corp. (VIT), up 2.5 cents to 41.5 cents on 2.14 million shares, has received assays of up to 1.2 grams of gold per tonne over 144.5 metres in the Olive-Shamrock zone at its Dublin Gulch project in central Yukon. The assays, from eight holes drilled in the company's current 60-hole drill program, also included a 73.8-metre hit that ran 1.6 grams per tonne. The other holes also produced gold over considerable intervals, but with lesser grades. Mr. McConnell, president and chief executive officer, says the company's assays "continue to demonstrate strong continuity of mineralization" in the core of the Main Olive zone, as well as along strike toward Shamrock. He adds that the $3.6-million drilling program is ahead of schedule and under budget.
