New York spot gold gained $6.50 to $1,234.10 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 8.42 points to 633.84 while the TSX Gold Index added 4.77 points to 201.21. Most gold miners moved higher today. Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) added 29 cents to $5.19 on 10.76 million shares, while Iamgold Corp. (IMG) added 23 cents to $3.66 on 3.36 million shares.

Thomas Patton's Quaterra Resources Inc. (QTA), up one-half cent to seven cents on 139,000 shares, has appointed Gerald Prosalendis as its president and chief operating officer. He replaces Mr. Patton, who continues as chairman and chief executive officer. Mr. Patton lauded his new president for having been "involved in decision making at a senior level" for 30 years across a variety of industries. Neither he nor his new appointee mention it, but Mr. Prosalendis spent nearly half those years as a journalist and editor with the Vancouver Sun. That came to an end in 1997, when, after dithering to and fro for a month, he left the newspaper business to take a job as the investor relations man for Dia Met Minerals Ltd.
