New York spot gold fell $3.40 to $1,098.00 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 8.62 points to 483.67 while the TSX Gold Index gained 0.22 point to 127.30. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) gained 26 cents to $12.16 on 8.65 million shares while Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) slipped 26 cents to $38.64 on 1.34 million shares.

Chuck Fipke and Chad Ulansky's Cantex Mine Development Corp. (CD), unchanged at four cents on 46,000 shares, has received assays of up to 11,400 parts per billion (11.4 grams of gold per tonne) in its latest soil, talus and rock sampling program at North Rackla and Mount Good in central Yukon. The samples also yielded intriguing quantities of other metals, including silver, lead, zinc and copper. Cantex now has a dozen areas with anomalous metal content on North Rackla and another 10 on Mount Good.

Mr. Fipke, chairman, and Mr. Ulansky, president and chief executive officer, say their geologists are "most encouraged" by the extensive gold, silver and base-metal results obtained on the two claim blocks, adding that the newly defined areas will be the company's focus this year. Most of Cantex's plan for this year will be more of the same, with additional infill sampling, prospecting and geologic mapping in the works, but the company does say that drilling "is envisaged." Cantex acquired its first claims in the area five years ago and has been a busy sampler of soil, talus and rock since then, but neither North Rackla nor Mount Good has seen a drill program as yet.
