New York spot gold closed down $7 to $1,184.20 Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange slipped 1.49 points to 685.51, while the TSX Gold Index edged up 2.49 points to 164.29.
Despite bullion's drop, major Canadian gold miners ended the day up slightly. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) rose $1.18 to $38.11, Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI) rose 33 cents to $8.49, Goldcorp Inc. (G) gained 20 cents to $22.01 and New Gold Inc. (NGD) added six cents to $4.
New Gold's president, Bob Gallagher, was a good sport this morning, receiving a pie in his face on the lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery. There, he participated in Teck Resources Ltd.'s (TCK.B: $18.02) annual Teck Celebrity Pie Throw, which raised $1-million for the British Columbia Children's Hospital. The event was hosted by "celebrity" Barry Deley, a local weatherman. The 19 pie-ees included Mr. Gallagher, six Teck executives, a vice-president from Goldcorp, as well as some lawyers, mining consultants and hospital workers.
