New York spot gold closed down $7.60 to $1,165.30 Monday, hitting a new four-year low as the U.S. dollar continued to rally. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 3.49 points to 766.10, while the TSX Gold Index edged up 5.06 points to 139.68.
Gold miners in Canada ended the day up slightly. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) rose 16 cents to $13.54, Goldcorp Inc. (G) rose 26 cents to $21.41, Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) added eight cents to $6.68 and Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI) gained 21 cents to $8.62.
Ron Little's Orezone Gold Corp. (ORE) dropped 10 cents to 38 cents on 5.99 million shares. The company has suspended work at its Bombore gold project in Burkina Faso because of what it calls "minor vandalism" that occurred over the weekend. It did not give details, but said all of its workers remain safe. Orezone is the first Canadian company to halt work in the country, following violent protests that toppled the government last week. Iamgold Corp. (IMG: $2.17) and Semafo Inc. (SMF: $3.05) are continuing to mine uninterrupted, and Mark O'Dea's True Gold Corp. (TGM: $0.205) said construction at its Karma gold mine in the country also continues. Until last week, Burkina Faso had been one of the friendlier and safer West African countries in which to do business. Locals have no problems approving mines, as long as the miner agrees to some community spending.
