The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Friday was a pleasant 63-38-167. The TSX Venture Exchange gained four points to 696 while polished diamond prices inched higher. Robert Gannicott's Dominion Diamond Corp. (DDC) gained 21 cents to $20.65 on 163,000 shares. Dominion has been running with Brendan Bell as acting CEO since Mr. Gannicott took a three-month leave of absence late last year to deal with an important medical issue. He is supposed to return this month, but there are whispers that he may not be able to return to the company he helped found in the early 1990s and has led since 1999. Don Bubar's Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (AVL) jumped 5.5 cents to 34.5 cents on 1.84 million shares. The stock, 35.5 cents at one point today, traded for just 20 cents early this month. There has been no news about its Nechalacho rare earth project near Yellowknife or its East Kemptville metals play in Nova Scotia that would account for the rally.
