Eight Capital men look to identify on-line detractor

Toronto businessmen Mark Attanasio and Donato Sferra have filed a case in the Supreme Court of British Columbia in which they are looking to identify a Stockhouse forum poster who called them slimy and crooked. They say that the user's post was false, malicious and entirely defamatory. They are asking that the court order Stockhouse to hand over identifying information.
The case is contained in a petition that Mr. Attanasio and Mr. Sferra filed at the Vancouver courthouse on June 13, 2017. The two men identify themselves as the operators of Eight Capital Partners, a broker-dealer that was formerly known as Dundee Capital Partners. They are seeking the identity of a Stockhouse user named "MadeIn86." According to the petition, that user was behind a single defamatory post that appeared in the Stockhouse forum on June 5, 2017. It was under the section for CBW, which is the symbol for Cannabis Wheaton Corp.
The post, as described in the petition, accused Mr. Attanasio of achieving business success through theft and "back room dealing." It said that he impregnated his former boss and received a promotion as a result. The post called him "one of Bay Streets worst." As for Mr. Sferra, the post said that he gained his position at Dundee's predecessor by having sex with the head of human resources. The post also accused Mr. Sferra of causing a "deep dive catastrophe" at Dundee's predecessor and of causing many valuable employees to depart.

Sounds like the poster (perhaps a scorned woman) may have had a lot of intimate knowledge of the players involved? As to poster identity, reminds me of the guy who used to have his password taped to his laptop and when he had 'his day' he was able to (easily) prove that he regularly left his computer unattended to use the washroom in the pizza place he hung out at. I am sure most on that site know of whom I speak.

This is Canada, not the good ole' USA.
If the judge says cough up the name then Stockhouse will do nothing to protect the identity of their clients and everything necessary to avoid legal fees by doing so, just as Stockwatch will.
Further, if it is your computer, you will be subject to legal action by the plaintiffs for the allegedly defamatory posts, should you attempt such a stupid defence as to say your pin number was used by another. Should you choose to defend your actions you will spend a fortune, and likely lose any such attempt. If you are lucky, the plaintiffs may also wish to avoid a trial and all the work associated with it and come to a settlement which will inevitably be oppressive, embarrassing and expensive with the appropriate apologies and bowing and scraping the defendant will surely have to endure.
These guys are serious and they have the means to see this through. Its a $50,000 to $100,000 deal at least and the plaintiffs will sue for a get costs maybe extra costs and on and on and on.
Whomever was so irresponsible in posting such nonsense, even if its got some truth to it, will suffer a dreadful year ahead, in my opinion. Sleepless nights, worry, financial stress and so on, which is EXACTLY what the plaintiffs are counting on.
I also think these guys know who the person is that perpetrated the libelous writings and they're just having a great time torturing him.
These things never end well for the defendants.

well well. if it is the truth, there is no defamation. another sad fact is this. If, as the current world seems to be run by islamists, christians and others who fear god and act morally, during ww2 these same moralists were running the show, the nazis would be ruling the world at the moment, and not one of us would be here on earth, unless of course you were a nazi. so, its time to clean house, and get the book thumpers outta offices now.

I am not sure what your religion has to do with this. some moron posted irresponsible comments on the internet and there is a price to pay.
"if it is the truth" has nothing to to with the consequences i am referring to. this person is now subject to litigation and that comes with a cost, win or lose.
he is in trouble plain and simple.

Ive seen this immature nonsense all my career in this business and defendants always lose. which is ironic because in most actions its the plaintiffs who normally lose, but this is one area of the law where well heeled promoters can get even with indiscreet dopey immature loose cannon sour grapes losers.

regardless. the best promoter in the world got into, then promoted the current WEED, the day he started, the greatest promoter in the world, the stock was stuck at under $9, and that deal supposedly had the greatest group of promoters promoting (turns out they weren't), well after the real greatest promoter in the world bought the paper, and promoted WEED, it ran with monstrous volume to around $17, the same greatest promoter in the world, ran t.nmx, same thing bought paper, then promoted it, and it ran with huge volumes to under $2. That people, is the current greatest promoter in the world at work. post 1 if you believe the judge will allow divulging, or 2 if judge will shrug this time.

Good one, Birdcat - but the fact remains that three years ago a very noisy poster who was also a stock tout was unmasked after a protracted battle. Many already knew his identity. And after everything was said and done he was banned from our favorite geezer tout site but paid ZERO dollars as it could not be proven within a shadow of a doubt that it was actually him doing the posting. That being said, this case holds appeal especially during the dog days - as *if* it goes to court, it will be interesting to hear what this lass has to say.

whomever y are referring to if even a real person or real dispute (which, if true, then you won't object to naming said promoter and said case)certainly paid dearly in spite of any penalty by way of final legal conclusion. Such events are fraught with costs in time money and some mental stress i don't care who u are its a pain.
here are two lessons i myself learned late in my career :
One, "never fight with a pig, because you can't win, you both get dirty and the pig likes it"
Two, "if you're going to seek revenge, dig two graves"
There are others but these are certainly worth considering as valuable advice i m h o
i find it best to be on the right side of the trade and if i am wrong about people places or things then its the man in the mirror who can decide if its worth a fight.
