Vancouver lawyer Martin Chambers, who recently returned to Canada after spending 13 years in a U.S. prison, has filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of British Columbia against his former common law spouse, Qing Zhang. He complains that she cut him off from his money in 2009 and, without his consent, withdrew $3.19-million from corporations he controlled. He is seeking court orders that would effectively undo corporate transactions she made in his absence.
The allegations are contained in a notice of claim Mr. Chambers filed at the Victoria courthouse on July 2, 2015. He is suing Ms. Zhang and her sister over several corporate transactions that occurred while he was in jail, serving his sentence for money laundering. He complains that Ms. Zhang fraudulently transferred his interest in a private entity called R17 Freecorp Holdings Ltd., and in doing so abused a power of attorney he had granted her.
