John Hislop's Caravel Management Corp. has filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of British Columbia against its former bookkeeper of 15 years, Jolene Roberts, claiming that she misappropriated $106,814 of the company's money. The unauthorized payments went undetected by Caravel for six years, until after the company fired her in 2011, the suit states.
The allegations are contained in a notice of claim that Caravel filed at the Vancouver courthouse on Thursday, May 10. According to the suit, the company hired Ms. Roberts as a bookkeeper and internal accountant some time around 1996. The problems began in 2005, when Ms. Roberts started transferring money to herself purportedly as reimbursement of expenses. She had not incurred any expenses that were for the purpose of Caravel's business, the suit states.
The company complains that the unauthorized payments had a material effect on its financial position. Among other things, they reduced its assets and increased its expenses. Caravel also says that it lent Ms. Roberts $40,000 in February, 2009, before it discovered the unauthorized expenses.
