New York spot gold closed up $23.80 to $1,154.10 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 1.01 points to 544.20 while the TSX Gold Index jumped 8.82 points to 128.65. Canadian gold miners had strong showings. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) jumped $3.46 to $34.28 on 2.25 million shares while Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) gained 82 cents to $8.72 on 7.78 million shares. Alacer Gold Corp. (ASR) posted one of the weaker gains, adding just five cents to $2.99 on 4.39 million shares.

Douglas Forster's Newmarket Gold Inc. (NMI), up seven cents to $1.47 on 477,000 shares, has received assays of up to 14.79 grams of gold per tonne over 11.4 metres from the Sliver lode at its Cosmo mine in Australia's Northern Territory. It also assayed 5.85 grams per tonne over 5.7 metres in the Cosmos Deeps target. Sliver is just 25 metres from the current underground workings and Cosmos Deeps is about 200 metres downplunge of the existing resource; both offer potential for "additional tonnes to be included in the near-term mine plan," says Mr. Forster, president and chief executive officer. Cosmo, which produced over 77,000 carats last year and is on track for a comparable performance this year, holds 4.5 million tonnes measured and indicated at 3.6 grams per tonne with a further 1.2 million inferred at 2.94 grams per tonne.
