Pure in third, algorithmic code theft on the rise

Pure Trading remained the third most active of Canada's alternative trading systems in the week ended July 23, 2010. The most active ATS by volume was Alpha Trading Systems with an average of 146.0 million shares per day. Chi-X Canada came second with 33.3 million shares per day and Pure Trading third, with 18.3 million shares per day. Dark pool Match Now took fourth place with 8.0 million shares per day and in last place was Omega ATS with 3.6 million shares per day. Combining their volumes, the ATSs accounted for 28.5 per cent of the total Canadian volume which includes the Toronto Stock Exchange, the TSX Venture Exchange and the Canadian National Stock Exchange.

Chi-X Canada, in its second-quarter 2010 update, says it has experienced rapid growth since its two-year anniversary in March. The ATSs second-quarter average daily volume was 41.9 million shares, up from 32.7 million shares in its first quarter and 18.3 million shares in its second quarter last year. Also during Q2, Chi-X traded over 70 million shares on three days in May. It hit a record on May 20, with 74.8 million shares.
