Aviation Week Expands Global Editorial Team & Expertise

2013-02-15 09:30 ET - News Release

Strengthens its commitment to the European aerospace, defense and airline markets with key appointments

NEW YORK, Feb. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran aviation journalists Tony Osborne and Cathy Buyck are the newest members of the international team of editors at Aviation Week (http://www.aviationweek.com), while Frankfurt-based Jens Flottau has been promoted to lead the Commercial Aviation team.  Osborne joins as the new London Bureau Chief, and Buyck will serve as contributing editor from a newly opened bureau in Brussels.

Flottau was named managing editor of the Commercial Aviation team, which provides coverage of airlines, aircraft builders and suppliers for Aviation Week & Space Technology and the Aviation Week Intelligence Network.  He will direct a team of writers across Europe, the U.S., Singapore, China and the South Pacific. Flottau has been reporting on the air transport industry since 1992, when he was still a student. He graduated from the Munich Journalism School in 1998 and began contributing articles to Aviation Week two years later.  Prior to his appointment as managing editor, Flottau oversaw coverage of Airbus and airlines in Europe, Latin America and Africa. He has published books on the airline industry, the history of the Boeing 747 and emerging aircraft manufacturers such as Embraer and Comac. Flottau received the Hugo Junkers award for Germany's aviation press in 2003 and was named Germany's Business Journalist of the Year for Tourism/Air Transport in 2010 and 2012.

Osborne has joined Aviation Week as the new London bureau chief, focusing on the European defense market and the global helicopter industry. Osborne comes to Aviation Week from Shephard Media Group, where he was deputy editor on two rotary-wing magazines, Rotorhub—which he helped create—and Defence Helicopter. He also covered a range of defense issues for other Shephard publications. A longtime aviation enthusiast, Osborne contributes regularly to Internet aviation forums. An accomplished photographer, his images have appeared in aviation publications and newspapers across Europe.

Buyck joins Aviation Week as a contributing editor and covers European regulatory affairs, commercial air transport and maintenance, repair and overhaul from our new bureau in Brussels. Buyck comes to Aviation Week from the Centre for Aviation, where she was senior analyst for Europe. Prior to that role, she was Air Transport World's European Editor/Bureau Chief, leading ATW's Europe, Middle East and African coverage for the magazine and the daily online news. Buyck won the 2010/11 European Regions Airline Association's Hank McGonagle Journalism Award for her writing on the inclusion of aviation in the European Union's Emissions Trading system. She served for numerous years as president of the Aviation Press Club in Belgium.

"We are pleased to welcome Tony and Cathy to their new roles at Aviation Week," said Aviation Week & Space Technology Editor-in-Chief Joseph C. Anselmo. "They are great additions to our team and will greatly reinforce our global and online presence. This decision to move management of the commercial team from the U.S. to Europe and put it under the seasoned guidance of Jens Flottau reflects Aviation Week's commitment to providing a more global perspective in our coverage."
