HOUSTON, Nov. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- BBVA Compass announced today that its Chairman and CEO Manolo Sánchez has been elected to the American Bankers Association's board of directors, joining CEOs from banks of all sizes on the ABA's governing body.

Sánchez will serve a three-year term on the board, where he will represent the interests of the U.S. banking industry, BBVA Compass and the communities in the bank's Sunbelt region. ABA, which serves as a united voice for the nation's $16 trillion banking industry and its more than 2 million employees, provides educational benefits and programs for its members, represents the banking industry in Washington and speaks on behalf of it in the press.

Sánchez began his career with BBVA in 1990 in the International Correspondent Banking area. His career advanced with a number of management positions, and in 1999, he was appointed the director of the BBVA New York branch. In 2002, Sánchez joined the BBVA Bancomer team in Mexico City as chief risk officer. Since returning to the U.S. in 2005, he has held a number of increasingly responsible and strategic positions, including a lead role in the merger and integration of BBVA's four U.S. subsidiary banks. In December 2008, Sánchez assumed the helm of BBVA Compass and in September 2010, he assumed the role of BBVA U.S. Country Manager over all of BBVA Group's U.S. assets.

A graduate of Yale University, Sánchez earned master's degrees in international relations from the London School of Economics and in advanced European studies from the College of Europe.
