ECN Magazine Names PLX Technology ExpressFabric as Market Disrupter Finalist for 2014 IMPACT Awards Program

2014-03-24 08:00 ET - News Release

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/24/14

PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), the global leader in PCI Express® (PCIe®) silicon and software connectivity solutions enabling emerging data center architectures, today announced that PLX® ExpressFabric® technology has been named a finalist in the ECN IMPACT Awards program, which recognizes excellence in electronics design engineering. A highly respected and widely read industry publication, ECN selected PLX's PCIe-based ExpressFabric for the IMPACT program's Market Disrupter category due to the technology's ability to slash hardware costs and energy requirements.

PLX has extended the reach of PCIe for use as a fabric in data center and cloud computing through its ExpressFabric initiative. By building on the natural strengths of PCIe -- it's everywhere, it's fast, it's low power, it's affordable -- and by adding straightforward, standards-compliant extensions that address multi-host and I/O sharing applications, PLX has created a universal interconnect that substantially improves on the status quo. The PCIe interconnect is already native and dominant inside systems, and a PCIe-based box-to-box fabric within a rack eliminates the need for expensive, power-hungry bridging devices such as adapter cards that translate PCIe to InfiniBand, Ethernet or Fibre Channel.

ExpressFabric technology is initially targeted at small- to medium-sized cloud clusters -- with up to 1,000 nodes and eight racks -- where the majority of the high-volume innovations are taking place. New architectures such as solid-state-drive-based tiered storage, micro-servers and general-purpose computing on graphics processing units already take advantage of PCIe's rich features, and market leaders are currently evaluating ExpressFabric.

"We developed ExpressFabric with the objective of easing the transition of systems from established but aging designs to new, higher-efficiency architectures with lower cost and energy requirements," said Krishna Mallampati, senior marketing director, PCIe switch products, PLX. "That a respected industry voice such as ECN recognizes ExpressFabric as a market-disrupting technology is testament to PCI Express and how PLX continues to evolve this powerful interconnect for emerging market needs."

PLX is the worldwide market leader with over 70 percent market share in PCIe switch products, today offering 18 ExpressLane PCIe Gen3 switches. The company has more Gen3 switches in development to enable ExpressFabric, enterprise storage, and other key data center applications, while in parallel is planning for PCIe Gen4 products.

The ECN IMPACT Awards were created to recognize excellence and groundbreaking innovation in design engineering, and highlight the top products and services across 18 categories. Industry experts comprise the program's judging panel, which is tasked with evaluating each entrant on a multi-point rating system. Winners will be announced during the EDS conference, at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, on May 6, 2014.
