PG&E Supports New California Goal to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

2015-04-29 17:00 ET - News Release

SAN FRANCISCO -- (Business Wire)

Today, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced an Executive Order establishing the most ambitious greenhouse gas reduction target in North America. The new goal aims to reduce emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. PG&E applauds the Governor’s leadership in setting this new goal. PG&E believes it is bold, and with the right structures in place, attainable. It demonstrates why California has been a leader in technology, the environment and innovation for decades, and the Governor’s vision will fuel future economic growth and innovation.

California’s electric sector has made great progress toward achieving a low-carbon future. In 2013, California’s electric sector emissions rate was half the national average. And in California’s natural gas sector, continuing acceleration of infrastructure replacement and leak backlog reduction is significantly reducing methane emissions.

PG&E has made significant contributions to the state’s progress and is well on its way to meeting California’s ambitious clean energy goals through renewables, energy efficiency, support for distributed resources, infrastructure investment, and working to get more electric vehicles on the road.

“We stand with the Governor to do our part to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions levels in the electric and gas sectors. We believe the path to meeting this bold goal, while continuing to grow California's economy, is through an integrated approach to achieve sustainable and future greenhouse gas emissions reductions in a way that manages costs for our customers, ensures electric reliability and gas safety, and creates a model program for others to follow,” said PG&E Corporation Chairman, CEO and President Tony Earley.

As new technologies emerge, policies should allow California to do what it does best – innovate. PG&E believes future greenhouse gas policy should encourage cross-sector reductions and recognize that not all sectors and businesses are starting from the same point. A framework that enables PG&E to make the right choices for its customers and operations will ensure that the company achieves the necessary reductions in the most affordable and sustainable manner.

There is much that still needs to be done, but PG&E believes that by working together, we can all build a better California and help lead the nation and the world into a cleaner energy future.
