AUGUSTA, Maine -- (Business Wire)
By the end of the year, 225 municipalities – or nearly half the cities
and towns in Maine – will offer Rapid Renewal, the state’s online
vehicle registration renewal service, to their residents.
Rapid Renewal makes it possible for citizens in participating
municipalities to renew their motor vehicle registrations and pay their
local excise taxes in one simple transaction. Ten municipalities served
as pilot communities for the service when it was introduced by the Maine
Secretary of State’s office in 2001. Other cities have steadily adopted
Rapid Renewal since that time, with a record 25 municipalities signing
on in 2015. In 2014, the service saw its millionth customer.
“Citizens increasingly want to conduct business with government online,
rather than having to travel to a physical location and stand in line,”
said Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap. “Rapid Renewal’s brisk
adoption rate demonstrates that Maine municipalities are working to
respond to citizens’ needs.”
An additional 9 municipalities have come on board in 2016. Dan Andrews,
general manager of Maine Information Network LLC, the state’s digital
government services provider which built and manages the Rapid Renewal
service, said he expects the trend to continue and anticipates that as
many as 225 municipalities may offer the service by year-end.
“It is great to have nearly half of the cities in Maine using the Rapid
Renewal service,” said Andrews. “Our goal is to make government more
efficient – both state and local government. Rapid Renewal is a great
example of delivering online efficiencies.”
Augusta, Maine-based Maine Interactive Network has been managing the
state of Maine’s portal, Maine.gov, since 1999. During this time, the
company has developed hundreds of online services for both state and
local government.
