Globe/NYT say publishers, Turow sue Meta, Zuckerberg

2026-05-06 07:12 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that five major publishers -- Hachette, Macmillan, McGraw Hill, Elsevier and Cengage -- and best-selling novelist Scott Turow have filed a class-action copyright infringement lawsuit against Meta and its founder and chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that the complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York claims that Meta and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg illegally used millions of copyrighted works to train their artificial intelligence program Llama, and that they removed copyright notices from those works. The lawsuit asserts that Meta's engineers relied on pirated books and journal articles to train the program by downloading unlicensed copies through websites such as Anna's Archive, an open-source search engine for piracy sites including LibGen and Sci-Hub. The suit also claims that "Zuckerberg himself personally authorized and actively encouraged the infringement." The plaintiffs claim that Meta's AI program endangers writers and publishers by enabling the quick production of copycat books and detailed summaries of copyrighted works, potentially reducing book sales.
