West Texas Intermediate crude for June delivery added $1.11 to $61.02 on the New York Merc, while Brent for July added $1.07 to $63.91, both benchmarks notching a weekly gain and snapping a two-week losing streak (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $13.50 to WTI, up from a discount of $14.20. Natural gas for June added 20 cents to $3.79. The TSX energy index added 4.80 points to close at 251.50.
The oil patch surfed to the end of the week on another wave of quarterly financials. Jonathan Wright and Mike Lawson's Alberta Montney producer, NuVista Energy Corp. (NVA), added 39 cents to $12.50 on 1.67 million shares, as it toasted "strong operational and financial performance" in the first quarter. Production averaged a record 89,500 barrels a day, surpassing analysts' predictions of 88,000 barrels a day and NuVista's own guidance of 87,000 to 88,000 barrels a day. Cash flow of 94 cents a share was well above analysts' predictions of 84 cents a share.
