West Texas Intermediate crude for May delivery added $2.21 to $64.68 on the New York Merc, while Brent for June added $2.11 to $67.96 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $15.20 to WTI, down from a discount of $14.10. Natural gas for May stayed unchanged at $3.24. The TSX energy index added 5.27 points to close at 242.42.

Oil prices snapped a two-week losing streak, notching a weekly gain to close out a shortened week ahead of the Easter long weekend. Here in Canada, Imperial Oil Ltd. (IMO: $88.37) looked to impress investors at an investor day in Toronto. Attendees were greeted by a robotic dog to help illustrate "the many ways we are applying technology to our business," chortled chairman and outgoing chief executive officer Brad Corson. This will be his last investor day as Imperial's CEO, as he is handing over the reins in three weeks to president John Whelan, whom he hailed as "the best person to succeed me and lead Imperial into the future." The two of them and other members of management then laid out a rosy vision of that future, including a 25-per-cent jump in production by 2029 (relative to 2019) and a continuation of "substantial" free cash flow (citing as evidence the $20.5-billion in cumulative free cash flow from 2020 through 2024).
