The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq were closed for a national day of mourning for former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, who died Dec. 29 at 100. West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery added 60 cents to $73.92 on the New York Merc, while Brent for March added 76 cents to $76.92 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $15.90 to WTI, down from a discount of $11.20. Natural gas for February added five cents to $3.70. The TSX energy index added a fraction of a point to close at 280.57.
It was a fairly quiet session as the main U.S. markets adhered to a long-standing tradition of closing for a day to honour a deceased national leader. The practice goes back more than 150 years, following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865, and was most recently observed in 2018 after the death of George H.W. Bush. The NYSE is also flying its U.S. flag at half-staff throughout a 30-day mourning period.
