West Texas Intermediate crude for March delivery added 63 cents to $52.05 on the New York Merc, while Brent for April added 98 cents to $57.32 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $17.60 to WTI, down from a discount of $17.15. Natural gas for March added one cent to $1.84. The TSX energy index lost a fraction to close at 130.47.
"Shut down Canada. Do whatever you can do." So urged Molly Wickham (also known as Sleydo'), a spokesperson for the minority of indigenous agitators and their supporters who are trying to shut down the Coastal GasLink pipeline in Northern British Columbia. Her on-line message was posted a week ago and her useful allies have heeded the call. Rail and commuter traffic has been disrupted across Canada, CN Rail and VIA Rail are shutting down parts of their service amid blockades, and as of this very writing, groups of demonstrators are enacting their self-hyped "B.C. government shutdown" (which based on photographs seems largely to involve chanting, waving signs and eating snacks in front of government buildings in Victoria. There are certainly worse ways to spend a sunny Friday).
