New York spot gold surged higher Tuesday, adding $99.10 to $3,432.50. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 9.51 points to 665.55 while the TSX gold index added 17.13 points to 486.12. Galiano Gold Inc. (GAU) did well today, adding 40 cents to $2.28 on 1.08 million shares. So did Centerra Gold Inc. (CG), which rose $1.40 to $10.33 on 2.98 million shares. Yes, Centerra had a good first quarter and a promising resource update, but its seven-cent dividend is unchanged.
Nearly all gold miners listed in Canada moved northward with bullion today, so show some pity for the shareholders of the few laggards. One was Robex Resources Inc. (RBX), which dropped seven cents to $2.98 on 141,000 shares. Another was Starcore International Mines Ltd. (SAM), which lost two cents to 22 cents on 195,000 shares.
Dr. David Webb's Sixty North Gold Mining Ltd. (SXTY) fell two cents to 10 cents on 97,000 shares on word it has drilled a 9.8-metre near-surface interval grading 0.04 gram of gold per tonne at its Mon project, just north of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. The second hole of a program designed to test a geophysical anomaly, identified as a possible volcanogenic massive sulphide target, produced 0.03 gram of gold over 3.5 near-surface metres.
