New York spot gold fell $6.30 Monday, closing at $2,741.60. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 2.76 points to 617.15 while the TSX gold index dipped 0.50 point to 390.56. Allied Gold Corp. (AAUC) helped lead the retreat, as it lost 18 cents to $3.81 on 1.09 million shares. Silvercorp Metals Inc. (SVM), which added 28 cents to $6.79 on 1.69 million shares, was among those northbound today.

Alan Carter's Cabral Gold Inc. (CBR) jumped three cents to 33 cents on 459,000 shares on word that it has drilled a five-metre near-surface interval grading 2.45 grams of gold per tonne. The hit came from a hole drilled into the Machichie NE target at its Cuiu Cuiu project in Brazil. The test was a stepout hole drilled in the area where a previous hole returned 33 grams of gold per tonne across 11 metres. A second new stepout hole in the area yielded 13.3 grams per tonne across six metres.

As a result, the Machichie NE zone, which contains "significant high-grade gold mineralization," has now been extended for at least 200 metres along strike, says Mr. Carter, president and chief executive officer. The zone, he cheers, remains open at depth and along strike, adding that it lies just 650 metres north of the MG gold deposit and only 150 metres northeast of the Machichie Main zone. "These latest drill results continue to suggest that we have made a significant gold discovery at Machichie NE," Mr. Carter enthuses.
