New York spot gold rose $3.90 Wednesday, ending the day at $1,797.10. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 11.97 points, closing at 946.79, while the TSX gold index fell 1.74 points to 286.12. Many Canadian gold miners tracked lower again today. Newmont Corp. (NGT) lost 41 cents to $71.09 on 220,000 shares while Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) fell 84 cents to $70.11 on 1.09 million shares. Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd. (OR) bucked the downdraft, ending the day up 18 cents to $15.83 on 567,000 shares.
Michael Hudson's Mawson Gold Ltd. (MAW) jumped 1.5 cents to 18.5 cents on 3.99 million shares on word of a 21.7-metre hit averaging 4.7 grams of gold and 1.0 per cent antimony from a hole drilled well beneath the Rising Sun Mine area at its Sunday Creek project in the goldfields of Victoria, Australia. The grade was bolstered by a few rich zones, including one that returned 145.5 grams of gold and 20 per cent antimony over 0.4 metre. As well, a 77.6-metre interval testing the Apollo Mine area yielded 0.8 gram of gold and 0.2 per cent antimony, including a 23.5-metre zone averaging 1.6 grams of gold and 0.3 per cent antimony.
