New York spot gold rose $4.30 Thursday, closing at $1,797.10. The TSX Venture Exchange added 6.84 points, closing at 925.43, while the TSX gold index rose 4.16 points to 284.42. Most Canadian gold miners continued to post healthy gains today. Karora Resources Inc. (KRR) rode news of record gold production in its third quarter -- just over 30,000 ounces -- to a 19-cent gain, ending the day at $4.18 on 3.84 million shares. New Gold Inc. (NGD), which said it had third-quarter "challenges" at its mines while producing just over 105,000 ounces of gold equivalent, struggled five cents higher late in the day to $1.75 on 3.32 million shares.

The drought is over for Collin Kettell and Craig Roberts's New Found Gold Corp. (NFG). The company rose eight cents to $8.96 on 345,000 shares today on word of its second batch of assays from Queensway in north-central Newfoundland in the past day. Assays from 11 new holes drilled into the Keats zone, a well-drilled and prolific source of bonanza-grade gold along the Appleton fault, have shown up to 61.5 grams of gold per tonne over 5.2 metres, a hit that came from a 65-metre stepout hole.
