New York spot gold rose $10.60 Thursday, closing at $1,898.60. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 3.07 points to 979.91 while the TSX gold index added 7.56 points to 329.82. Pan American Silver Corp. (PAAS) helped lead the advance again today, as it rose 85 cents to $39.08 on 1.72 million shares. McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX) did even better, adding 21 cents to $2 on 1.4 million shares. Neither company had news to drive their shares.
One Canadian gold miner with news, Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX), moved higher. It added 78 cents to $28.67 on 4.99 million shares after Graham Shuttleworth, chief financial officer and senior executive vice-president, said that in addition to a nine-U.S.-cent-per-share quarterly dividend, Barrick will be paying a 14.05-U.S.-cent return of capital distribution to shareholders of record as of late May. Two more capital distributions are planned this year, in August and November.
