New York spot gold lost $5.20 to $1,469.40 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.20 point to 536.52 while the TSX Gold Index dipped 1.45 points to 249.43. Most Canadian gold miners tracked lower with bullion today, although Centerra Gold Inc. (CG) managed a 12-cent gain, ending the day at $10.22 on 1.37 million shares. Centerra, a $13 stock in late October, stumbled late that month on word of troubles at its Mount Milligan mine. Centerra tripped again a few weeks ago, slumping as low as $8.27 on news of a rockfall at its Kumtor mine in Kyrgyzstan that has forced it to halt mining indefinitely.

James McDonald's Kootenay Silver Inc. (KTN), up one cent to 23 cents on 1.36 million shares, has found an intriguing new mineralized zone at its Columba solver project in Chihuahua, Mexico, that could bode well for the project. Proving the point will take more drilling, but for that, investors will have to wait until next year, says Mr. McDonald, president and chief executive officer.
