West Texas Intermediate crude for May delivery lost $1.20 to $85.23 on the New York Merc, while Brent for June lost 96 cents to $89.42 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.50 to WTI, up from a discount of $14.30. Natural gas for May added three cents to $1.87. The TSX energy index added 1.07 points to close at 302.15.
Oil sands giant Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) edged up five cents to $52.59 on 5.94 million shares. The gain came in spite of some unflattering news coverage: Its majority-owned Syncrude subsidiary has pled guilty to an offence relating to the death of an employee in June, 2021, according to a conviction statement yesterday from Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). The employee drowned after the excavator he was operating fell into a pond. Syncrude must pay $390,000, which will go to three third party organizations that promote workplace health and safety. (The OHS Act allows what is known as creative sentencing, whereby the court can redirect money that would otherwise be paid as fines.)
