West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery reached an intraday high of $80.09, its first time above $80 since November, 2014, before closing up $1.05 to $79.35 on the New York Merc (all figures in this para U.S.). Brent for December added 44 cents to $82.39. Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.42 to WTI, down from a discount of $12.26. Natural gas for November lost 11 cents to $5.57. The TSX energy index added 2.71 points to close at 155.29.
Alberta Montney producer Birchcliff Energy Ltd. (BIR) added 14 cents to $6.70 on 3.2 million shares. It is making some changes at the top, likely with an eye on future CEO succession plans. Mr. Tonken, who founded Birchcliff in 2004 and serves as chairman, CEO and president, is now turning over the president's role to Chris Carlsen. Mr. Carlsen will also become Birchcliff's chief operating officer. Up until now, he has served as vice-president of engineering.
