New York spot gold rose $19.50 to $1,855.40 today as the TSX Venture Exchange added 10.97 points to 642.98 while the TSX gold index rose 3.97 points to 274.44. Most Canadian gold miners moved higher today. Franco-Nevada Corp. (FNV), up big Wednesday but not so much yesterday, added another $2.84 to $185.91 on 589,000 shares today. McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX) had a good day, adding 49 cents to $9.91 on 40,000 shares.

It was a typically quiet Friday -- and not just any slow-news Friday, this is the Friday before the start of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada convention in Toronto, Canada's premier dog and pony show for mining promoters. Some promoters perhaps avoided their mailboxes or struggled over the final draft of that encouraging news release, so that they could start the week -- and the convention -- with the ever-cheerful greeting: "Oh, we had news today!"

Still, there were some with news. Paul Huet's Karora Resources Inc. (KRR) rose 11 cents to $4.58 on 680,000 shares on word it has completed a second decline at its Beta Hunt mine in Australia. This mine expansion was wrapped up ahead of schedule and on budget, the company said, adding that the first of three new vent raise installations at the mine is now complete. The two others will be completed this year.
